RESUMO

The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of different endodontic irrigants and adhesive systems on the resin bond strength of fiber post cementation. In total, 144 single-rooted, unrestored human teeth were endodontically treated and randomly divided into 12 groups according to four endodontic irrigants (distilled water as control; EDTA 17%; NaOCl 5%; chlorhexidine digluconate 2%) and three different adhesive/resin cement systems (etch-and-rinse: orthophosphoric acid, Parabond® A+B/Paracore®; self-etch: ParaBond® Non-Rinse Conditioner, Parabond® A+B/Paracore®; Universal: ClearfilTM Universal Bond/ClearfilTM DC Core Plus). Forty-eight hours after post cementation, ten teeth from each group were cross-sectioned into three discs (cervical, middle and apical regions). Thirty specimens of each group (n = 30) were submitted to a push-out test at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The remaining two teeth of each group were sectioned in the same manner, and the resin-dentin interface was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results were statistically analyzed with the ANOVA test and Tukey's test (p < 0,01). The adhesive protocols and post space region showed no significant effect on bond strength (p > 0.01). The combination of NaOCl 5% and ClearfilTM Universal Bond reduced the adhesive strength (p < 0.01). The NaOCl 5%, in relation to other irrigants, significantly decreased the push-out bond strength.

This study aimed to observe and compare the resin luting cement (RLC)/dentin interfaces of different types of RLC systems with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study evaluated six self-adhesive resin luting cement systems (SARLCs), four systems combining a SARLC with a tooth primer (SARLCPs), and six conventional resin luting cement systems (CVRLCs). Cured resin composite rods were bonded to bovine dentin using RLCs in different etching modes. The morphological features at the interfaces were observed using SEM. Although all RLCs in etch-&-rinse (ER) mode showed a clear hybrid layer, most SARLCs had a thinner and more porous hybrid layer than the SARLCPs and CVRLCs. All SARLCPs with primer and CVRLCs showed a thin high-density layer below the primer layer in both etching modes. CVRLCs and SARLCPs with primer treatment systems may be more versatile and reliable when compared to simplified RLC systems.

BACKGROUND: Once bioceramic sealer (BCS) enters the dentinal tubules, it cannot be reliably removed. BCS-occupied dentinal tubules reduce fibre post retention strength. Coating gutta-percha with BCS only on the apical portion may improve post retention strength due to increased retention strength between the dentin and resin cement interface. The aim of the study was to test this hypothesis. METHODS: Root canals of 27 extracted human mandibular premolars were instrumented and randomly assigned to three obturation methods: conventional coating (CC), non-coating (NC), and apical coating (AC). The root canals were obturated with gutta-percha to 4 mm from the working length under an operating microscope. After the BCS was completely set, post spaces were prepared, and quartz fibre posts were cemented. The apical 4.5 mm of the roots were removed. Two samples were prepared at the apical, middle, and coronal root levels (one for scanning electron microscope (SEM) study and another for the push out bond strength (PBS) test). After the PBS test, the samples were examined with a stereo microscope to determine the failure mode: dentine-cement (DC), post-cement (PC) and mixed. The PBS data were analysed by One way ANOVA for the specific obturation method effects. Repeated ANOVA was used for the specific effects of the root levels on PBS in different obturation methods. RESULTS: At all three root levels, more continuous hybrid layers and denser resin tags were found in the NC and AC than the CC group. The AC and NC groups' PBS was significantly higher than the CC group at the apical 1/3 (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001) and coronal 1/3 (p = 0.016 and p = 0.041). The PBS in the CC group at the middle 1/3 was significantly higher than the apical 1/3 (p = 0.022). DC failure mode was most commonly found in the CC group, while PC failure mode was found most frequently in the NC and AC groups. CONCLUSIONS: The apical coating obturation method significantly increased PBS over the conventional coating method, potentially reducing fiber post dislodgement. However, this study was only preliminary. Clinical studies are required to confirm the results.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether dentin-etching extension and/or the hydrophobic-rich content of hybrid layers would affect fatigue strengths of a mild universal adhesive after long-term aging. METHODS: Twin-bonded resin-dentin interfaces were produced by etching sound midcoronal dentin beams with 32 % ortho-phosphoric acid for 15 s (OPA15s), 3 s (OPA3s) or 10 % meta-phosphoric acid for 15 s (MPA15s). Samples were bonded with a mild universal adhesive with or without additional coating using a solvent-free bisGMA-based bonding resin. Self-etch application served as control. Composite buildups were made with a nanofilled composite. Bar-shaped twin-bonded interfaces (0.9 × 0.9 × 12 mm) were aged for two years in artificial saliva at 37 â„ƒ and tested under 4-point flexure at quasi-static (n = 16) and cyclic loads (n = 35) until failure. The stress-life fatigue behavior was evaluated using the staircase method at 4 Hz. Crack initiation and fracture patterns were evaluated by SEM. Cyclic-loaded data was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis on Ranks (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Significantly higher fatigue life distributions and higher endurance limits were observed for less aggressive etch-and-rinse protocols (OPA3s and MPA15s) after long-term ageing. Hydrophobic-rich coating produced 20-32 % higher endurance limits, prevented micrometer-sized porosities at bonded interfaces, reduced etching-associated variability and lowered crack formation. Significance Long-term hydrolysis produces detrimental effects on the fatigue strength of resin-dentin interfaces. The bond-promotion effect of less aggressive etch-and-rinse protocols and the creation of hybrid layers with higher hydrophobic-rich content are critical to extend the durability of mild universal adhesives. Therefore, current oversimplification trends in adhesive dentistry may limit resin-dentin bonding performance.

This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of alpha-tocopherol in gel form on fracture strength, hybrid layer formation, and microtensile bond strength of endodontically treated teeth bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). Sixty bovine incisors were randomized into one of six groups (n = 10 incisors per group) defined by the interventions carried out after endodontic treatment. In the control group, no additional intervention was carried out, while all teeth in the five intervention groups were bleached with 40% H2 O2 and subsequently treated with alpha-tocopherol at concentrations of 15% (15AT), 20% (20AT), or 25% (25AT), with 10% sodium ascorbate (10SA), or with nothing (40HP). Fracture strength was evaluated in a mechanical testing machine, hybrid layer formation was assessed using scanning electron microscopy, and bond strength was determined using microtensile bond-strength testing. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests. No statistically significant difference regarding fracture strength was observed among groups. Hybrid layer formation was greater in the 15AT group than in groups 40HP and 10SA. Teeth in groups 15AT, 20AT, and 25AT demonstrated higher bond strength than teeth in groups 40HP and 10SA. Alpha-tocopherol, preferably at 15%, effectively reverses the deleterious effects, of bleaching, on hybrid layer formation and bond strength to dentin.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether lower dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) concentrations would affect long-term bond stability of simplified or multistep water-based adhesives to dry-etched dentin. METHODS: H3PO4-etched mid-coronal dentin surfaces from human molars were randomly blot- or air-dried for 30 s and pretreated or not with 5 or 50 % (v/v) ethanolic DMSO solutions. Untreated samples served as control. Samples were bonded with a two-step or a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive. Restored crown segments (n = 5/group) were stored in distilled water for 24 h and sectioned for microtensile bond strength testing. Resin-dentin beams (0.8 mm2) were tested under tension until fracture (0.5 mm/min) after 24 h and one year of storage in artificial saliva at 37 °C. Nanoleakage evaluation and hybrid layer characterization were performed by SEM. Bond strength data was examined by three-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Dry bonding produced significantly lower bond strengths than conventional wet bonding for both water-based adhesive systems (p < 0.05). DMSO-dry bonding restored bond strengths and reduced nanoleakage levels, regardless of adhesive type or DMSO concentration (p < 0.05). Bond strengths of DMSO-dry bonded samples were not significantly affected by long-term ageing regardless of adhesive type or DMSO concentration (p < 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE: Although bonding methacrylate-based resins to etched dentin is normally performed under wet conditions, hybridization of air-dried collagen can outperform conventional wet bonding by employing water-free DMSO solutions with concentrations as low as 5 %. Reduced moisture-related technique sensitivity, higher bonding performance and improved hybrid layer stability may contribute to extend the service life of resin-dentin bonding.

With the continuous development of adhesive technology leading to a wide variety of bonding systems in the market, clinicians are often faced with a vast number of systems to choose from. Although research and manufacture of bonding systems is constantly progressing, the focus has generally been on simplifying the bonding process by reducing the number of clinical steps, with little emphasis on evidence-based performance. This article draws attention to the current strategies of common commercially available products to guide clinicians during bonding system selection and application.

As a star material in conducting polymers, a polypyrrole coating was assembled onto the surface of 316 stainless steel by an electrochemical method. In the next step, the composite layer consisting of carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNS) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was sprayed. The corrosion manner of composite coatings in a simulated proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) environment was evaluated. The results show that the final coating generated at a voltage of 1.0 has demonstrated the optimized corrosion resistance. The polypyrrole layer improves the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel substrate, and the CNNS/PMMA coating further strengthens the physical barrier effect of the coating in corrosive solutions.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits of a novel dentin-bonding primer, namely, isocyanate-terminated urethane methacrylate precursor (UMP), which can form covalent bonds with demineralized dentin collagen. METHODS: The synthesized and purified UMP monomer was characterized and tested its effects on the degree of conversion (DC) and wettability of an acetone-based dental adhesive. Then UMP primers of different concentrations were formulated and used to prepare adhesive specimens, which were compared with solvent-treated groups. Primer-treated specimens with and without aging were also compared. To evaluate the bonding interface, microtensile strength tests, nano-indentation tests and nanoleakage- eavaluation were performed using a field-emission scanning electron microscope and nano-indenter. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software with significance set at α = 0.05 using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-way ANOVA to characterize the effects of the primer. RESULTS: Treatment with the UMP primer promoted the DC and wettability of the adhesive on the demineralized dentin surface (P < 0.05); it also increased the bond strength of the aged dentin bonding interface (P < 0.05). Nanoleakage was reduced; the bonding interface became more stable, and the continuity and strength of the hybrid layer improved (P < 0.05) following UMP treatment. The application of 5 mM UMP as a primer for dentin bonding could lead to a stable bonding interface and long-lasting bonding effects. SIGNIFICANCE: The use of 5 mM UMP primer developed in this study could improve dentin bonding durability and has excellent clinical application prospects.

The aim of this study is to compare the marginal seal and tensile bond strength (TBS) of prostheses fixed to enamel-dentin using different adhesive systems. Resin-composite inlays directly fabricated from Class V cavities of extracted human molars/premolars and mini-dumbbell-shaped specimens of bonded enamel-dentin were prepared for microleakage and tensile tests, respectively. Four adhesive systems were used: primerless-wet (1-1 etching for 10-, 30-, or 60-s, and 4-META/MMA-TBB), primer-moist (All-Bond2 + Duolink or Single-Bond2 + RelyX ARC), self-etch (AQ-Bond + Metafil FLO), and dry (Super-Bond C&B) bonding. Dye penetration distance and TBS data were recorded. Failure modes and characteristics of the tooth-resin interface were examined on the fractured specimens. All specimens in 10-, 30-, and 60-s etching primerless-wet, Super-Bond, and AQ-Bond had a microleakage-free tooth-resin interface. Primer-moist groups showed microleakage at the cementum/dentin-resin margin/interface. Significantly higher TBSs (p < 0.05) were recorded in primer-less-wet and Super-Bond groups with the consistent hybridized biopolymer layer after the chemical challenge and mixed failure in tooth structure, luting-resin, and at the PMMA-rod interface. There was no correlation between microleakage and TBS data (p = −0.148). A 1−3 µm hybrid layer created in the 10−60 s primerless-wet technique, producing complete micro-seal and higher tensile strength than enamel and cured 4-META/MMA-TBB, may enhance clinical performances like Super-Bond C&B, the sustainable luting resin.

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) signal, generated from the Kretschmann configuration, has been developed as an effective detection technology in chemical and biological sensors. The sensitivity of SPR signals to changes in the surrounding media makes it a valuable tool, as even a slight variation in refractive index can cause a significant change in SPR signals, such as phase, intensity, and resonance angle. However, the detection of ultralow changes in refractive index, which occur in chemical reactions or biological actions, remains a challenge for conventional SPR sensors due to their limited sensitivity. To overcome this limitation, we theoretically propose a novel guided-wave SPR (GWSPR) configuration coated with a few-layer blue phosphorene (blueP)/MoS2 hybrid structure. This configuration aims to enhance the electric field and subsequently achieve a significant improvement in sensitivity. The results of our study demonstrate that the proposed blueP/MoS2-based GWSPR sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 290°/RIU, which represents an impressive enhancement of approximately 82.4% compared to the conventional Au-based SPR sensor. This advancement addresses the challenge of detecting ultralow changes in refractive index and offers significant potential for enhancing the performance of chemical and biological sensors.

This study aimed to assess whether degradation-resistant monomers included in experimental dental adhesives can improve long-term bond strength compared to conventional monomers. This study followed the latest PRISMA guidance (2020). The search for the systematic review was carried out in four electronic databases: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, SciELO and EMBASE, without restrictions on the year of publication and language. The last screening was conducted in July 2022. Interventions included were in vitro studies on experimental dental adhesives that tested short-term and long-term bond strength, but also water sorption and solubility data when available, in extracted human molars. Meta-analyses were performed using Rstudio v1.4.1106. A summary table analyzing the individual risk of bias was generated using the recent RoBDEMAT tool. Of the 177 potentially eligible studies, a total of 7 studies were included. Experimental monomers with acrylamides or methacrylamide−acrylamide hybrids in their composition showed better results of aged bond strength when compared to methacrylate controls (p < 0.05). The experimental monomers found better sorption and solubility compared to controls and were significantly different (p < 0.001). It is possible to achieve hydrolytically resistant formulations by adding novel experimental monomers, with chemical structures that bring benefit to degradation mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Studies demonstrated the bond strength enhancement and the decrease in degradation of the adhesive interface after applying either self-etch adhesives or two-step, etch-and-rinse adhesives under an electric field. However, the presence of dentinal fluid driven by the pulpal pressure in vivo is a profounding factor affecting both the sealing ability and bond strength of adhesives. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three-step etch-and-rinse and two-step self-etch adhesives when applied with iontophoresis under simulated pulpal pressure on the permeability of dentin, resin infiltration, and the sealing ability of resin composite. METHODS: The experiments were done on 32 recently extracted premolars, randomly assigned into four groups (n = 8) according to two adhesive systems (SBMP and SE), applied following the manufacturer's instructions (control) for two groups or with iontophoresis for the others (SBMPi and SEi). For the iontophoresis, the anodal current was applied at 75 µA for 20 s through the cavity electrode during the bond. The fluid flow rate of dentin was recorded after cavity preparation (smear-layer-covered dentin; T1), bonding (T2), and composite restoration (T3) during the maintained pulpal pressure of 20 mm Hg. The flow rates were expressed as a percentage relative to the initial smear-layer-covered value for each specimen. Results were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to observe the resin/dentin interface. RESULTS: There were no significant increases in the mean flow rates from T1 to T3 in the SBMP (P = 0.355), while these changes in the SE were significant between T1 (100%) and T2 (166.77%) and T1 and T3 (221.16%) (P = 0.002; one-way RM ANOVA; Holm-Sidak test). For the iontophoresis groups, the mean flow rates decreased significantly from T1 to T2 and T1 to T3 of both SBMPi (T2 = 86.43, and T3 = 79.53; P < 0.001) and SEi groups (T2 = 87.96, and T3 = 81.48; P = 0.004). The iontophoresis of both adhesives produced the optimal resin infiltration with improved quality of the hybrid layer and resin tags. CONCLUSIONS: SBMP bonded with or without iontophoresis performed better sealing ability than SE under the same condition. Both adhesives applied with anodal iontophoresis significantly decreased the dentin permeability, contributing to the improved resin infiltration.

Using a biomimetic strategy and bioinspired materials, our work proposed a new technological approach to create a hybrid transitional layer between enamel and dental biocomposite. For this purpose, an amino acid booster conditioner based on a set of polar amino acids (lysine, arginine, hyaluronic acid), calcium alkali, and a modified adhesive based on BisGMA and nanocrystalline carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite are used during dental enamel restoration. The molecular properties of the hybrid interface formed using the proposed strategy were understood using methods of multivariate statistical analysis of spectral information collected using the technique of synchrotron infrared microspectroscopy. The results obtained indicate the possibility of forming a bonding that mimics the properties of natural tissue with controlled molecular properties in the hybrid layer. The diffusion of the amino acid booster conditioner component, the calcium alkali, and the modified adhesive with nanocrystalline carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite in the hybrid interface region creates a structure that should stabilize the reconstituted crystalline enamel layer. The developed technology can form the basis for an individualized, personalized approach to dental enamel restorations.

In the present study, MoO3:MoS2 hybrid thin layers have been synthesized through partial oxidation of MoS2. We have demonstrated that the reaction requires darkness conditions to decrease the oxidation rate, thus obtaining the hybrid, MoO3:MoS2. A simple liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) is carried out to achieve homogenous MoS2 nanoflakes and high reproducibility of the results after MoS2 oxidation. XPS analyses reveal the presence of MoO3, MoS2, and MoOxSy in the hybrid layer. These results are also confirmed by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution TEM. Optical absorbance reveals that the absorption peaks of the MoO3:MoS2 hybrid are slightly redshifted with the appearance of absorption peaks in the near-infrared region due to the defects created after the oxidation reaction. The composition and atomic percentages of each component in the hybrid layer as a function of reaction time have also been reported to give perspective guides for improving electronic and optoelectronic devices based on 2D-MoS2.

Aim: To evaluate nanoleakage depth and pattern of cervical restorations bonded with different adhesive systems. Materials and methods: Thirty-six extracted human premolar teeth were used for the study and grouped according to different bonding agents.Group I: fifth generation dentin bonding agent-ONE COAT SL.Group II: sixth generation dentin bonding agent-PARABOND.Group III: seventh generation dentin bonding agent-ONE COAT 7.0.For nanoleakage depth evaluation, 36 teeth were divided into three groups of 12 teeth each, according to adhesive systems used. For each adhesive system, teeth were subdivided into three subgroups of four teeth each, according to storage period, 24 hours, 1 month, and 3 months before the examination. In each tooth, two cavities were prepared (buccal and lingual), each cavity was lined with different adhesive systems and restored using a nanohybrid composite. The restored teeth were then immersed in water bath at temperature 37oC for intended period of time and then stored in 50% silver nitrate for 24 hours and photo developing solution for 8 hours. After this, the teeth were cut in buccolingual direction and subjected to scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis for nanoleakage depth analysis. Results: Group II showed the highest nanoleakage at all three periods. At 24 hours, group III showed more leakage than group I (mean = 0.2869 > 0.2506). At 1 month storage period, there was no significant difference in the leakage. At 3 months storage period, group III showed less leakage than group I (mean = 0.5544 < 0.7313). Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have great potential as an efficient solar energy harvesting system due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties, but the charge accumulation and recombination, as well as the moisture-induced degradation of the light-absorbing perovskite layers, remain great bottlenecks in practical applications for future technology. As a solution to this challenge, here we report a strategy to realize moisture-stable PSCs allowing fast charge transfer that, in turn, leads to high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Hybridization of hygroscopic copper(II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate metal-organic frameworks (Cu-BTC MOFs) with a light-absorbing perovskite layer for PSCs, where a moderate level of moisture attracted by Cu-BTC MOFs during the synthesis step, leads to enhanced perovskite crystallization. Besides, the perovskite-MOF hybrid facilitates the transfer of photoexcited electrons from the perovskite to TiO2 by providing additional channels for electron extraction. This enables a high PCE of 20.5% in a triple-cation perovskite-MOF device with negligible hysteresis compared to reference devices. Moreover, the perovskite-MOF hybrid exhibits high stability in ambient air under dark conditions over a long period (up to 22 months), while the unmodified counterpart quickly decomposes into PbI2. Consequently, this work provides a promising clue to realizeing fast charge transfer and high stability for high-performance PSCs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether smear layer management, via conservative etching protocols, and the hydrophobic-rich content of hybrid layers would affect the fatigue strength of resin-dentin interfaces. METHODS: Bar-shaped dentin beams obtained from sound third molars were wet-polished for 30 s. Dentin was etched with 32 % ortho-phosphoric acid for 3 or 15 s, 10 % meta-phosphoric acid for 15 s or by a prime-and-rinse application using a mild universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal, 3M ESPE). Self-etch application served as control. Coating was performed with a solvent-free bisGMA-based resin. Composite buildups were made with a nanofilled composite. Resin-dentin beams with twin-bonded interfaces were sectioned and stored in deionized water for 24 h at 37 â„ƒ before 4-point flexural quasi-static monotonic testing (n = 16). Stress-life fatigue behavior was evaluated under cyclic loading (n = 35) by the staircase method at 4 Hz. The tension side of cyclic-loaded unfractured beams were evaluated under SEM, along with the micro-morphology of etched dentin surfaces. Monotonic data was analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey Test and cyclic-loaded data by Kruskal-Wallis on Ranks (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Etching protocols and higher hydrophobic-rich content produced significantly higher fatigue life distributions (p < 0.05). Dentin demineralization was ranked as OPA 15 s > MPA 15 s > OPA 3 s > P + R > SE. Less aggressive etching and coating reduced crack formation at hybrid layers. SIGNIFICANCE: Current oversimplification trends in resin-dentin bonding constitute a trade-off between hybridization quality and easier adhesive handling. Controlled dentin etching and increasing the hydrophobic-rich content of hybrid layers may be necessary to extend the longevity of mild universal adhesives.

This study explored the location of MMP-2, -3, -8 in human root dentin and the inhibition of EGCG/EGCG-3Me on dentin-originated collagen proteases activities. Also, the study evaluated EGCG/EGCG-3Me modified etch-and-rinse adhesives (Single Bond 2, SB 2) for their bonding stabilities to intraradicular dentin. Immunostaining and liquid chip analysis demonstrated that MMP-2 and MMP-8 are widely distributed in root dentin while MMP-3 shows a higher fluorescence intensity in the middle and apical third of the root. The contents of MMP-2, -3 and -8 varies in different locations of human tooth root and MMP-2 has the highest content than MMP-3 and MMP-8 at each third of teeth root. Both EGCG and EGCG-3Me showed an inhibitory effect on the root dentin-derived MMPs in a concentration dependent manner (P < 0.05) and the inhibitory activity of EGCG-3ME was stronger than that of EGCG at the same concentration (P < 0.05). EGCG and EGCG-3Me were incorporated separately into the adhesive SB 2 at concentrations of 200, and 400 µg/mL respectively. The immediate push-out strength of SB 2 was not compromised by EGCG/EGCG-3Me modification. EGCG/EGCG-3Me modified adhesive had higher push-out strength than SB 2 after thermocycling, showing no correlation with concentration.
